Upayas: Practices to heal the emotions

Bhavana of positive sentiments, "therapeutic antidotes for the poisons of negative sentiments"

maitri-karunaa-muditopekshaanaam sukha-duhkha-punyaapunya-vishayaanaam bhaavanaatash chitta prasaadanam Patanjali Yoga Sutra, I-33

maitri: (metta in Pali) amity, love, loving kindness

karuna: compassion

mudita: joyfulness, gladness

upeksha: equanimity, indifference, being undisturbed

By cultivating the feelings of loving kindness toward those comfortable or successful,

By cultivating the feelings of compassion towards those suffering, (we prevent the desire to hurt others, or the smug satisfaction of not suffering while others are not so lucky)

By cultivating the feelings of joyfulness towards those who are vituous, (we become more virtuous ourselves and help shed the guilt from our previous less than virtuous behaviors )

By cultivating the feelings of equanimity to those who are ignorant, (we help eliminate intolerance in ourselves and asuage any anger that might arise when confronting evil)

The mind is purified and made serene and stable, ie one pointed, samadhi
