to Mystic River Yoga. Although we are no longer offering classes at 196 Boston Avenue in Medford,
Massachusetts, Judy and Arthur will continue to teach classes in Medford and Arlington, and Arthur will continue to maintain the web site offering information on workshops, the advanced yoga training course, and the home study course.
What
is Yoga?
The word "yoga" encompasses a broad palette
of practices organized around the process of 'Self Discovery'. The first
question usually involves some variation of "how can I feel better,
healthier, more relaxed?" These eventually lead to more subtle enquiry.
Who am I? What is the meaning of my life? Why am I here? What is the nature
of the mind? Why am I often unhappy? What is happiness?
The
yoga practices we teach begin by bringing a sense of well being to the
mind-body complex, and involve instruction in yoga poses, breathing, mindfulness and
relaxation techniques. These practices, included in the term Hatha Yoga,
are the yoga that is most familiar to the modern westerner.
At Mystic River Yoga students begin by learning simple principles of mindfulness, healthy
posture and breathing. A lot of unnecessary tension is created by poor
habits while sitting, standing and moving, and a lack of understanding
of the nature of the breath. In every class, specific poses and sequences
of poses are introduced so the student may experiece and practice these
healthy principles in action. The basic poses are covered every week so
understanding builds. The specific poses and sequences may vary from class
to class, but every class ends with a period of relaxation.
